Two weeks from Friday, Minnesota Duluth opens 2010-11 at Lake Superior State in a one-game trip to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., on Oct. 8 (followed with a game the next night at Northern Michigan.)

The Michigan College Hockey website has a capsule look at Lake Superior State here.

USA Today caught up with the Penn State hockey situation this week and talked with Western Collegiate Hockey Association commissioner Bruce McLeod and Tom Anastos of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in a story here.

Says McLeod of an impending Big Ten hockey conference: “The possibility of a Big Ten hockey conference has been a possibility for a long time and it’s just something we’ve kind of lived with. We will have to make adjustments and we will be different, but we will still be strong.”

And Doyle Woody of the Anchorage Daily News reports that Coleraine native Gino Guyer is doing well to start the season with Lillehammer (Norway) with nine points in three games in the European Elite League.

In looking toward Saturday’s Griak Invitational college and hkgh school cross country meets at the University of Minnesota (named for Duluth native Roy Griak), the blog Down the Backstretch takes a look at state-connected teams and individuals with a chance to do well, including the Division II power UMD women here.

Charlie Mahler of Down the Backstretch says of the Bulldogs:

UMD junior Morgan Place won the Division II race at 2009 Griak. Place has spent her entire college career winning races and she is undefeated so far in 2010.  The UMD women are ranked No. 6 in Division II and returns to defend their championship in the Griak Division II race. UMD is so deep that 4:24 1500-meter star runner Michelle SanCartier is currently running as the team’s fourth runner.
